Art Critique

The first artists peices I was really drawn to by the use of various different colours and combinations although with the use of many different colours maybe some tones needed to be played down. 

As you look closer you can see the brush marks in more detail, these marks are very textural and add depth to the peice. However it would be interesting to see a range of different sizes in the mark making. As well as this I feel as though collage could have been included in the peices in order to create more texture.

These were the second peices that grabbed my attention. They did this as even though there was colour incorporated the darkness of the drawings stood out. The colour scheme used worked well as they both are soft background colours. The black of the drawings on the blue peice can be quite harsh however the abstract marks make an interesting texture. I particularly like how the sketches from the image used in the peice are carried out throughout it. 

The last peices composition is pleasing to the eye as it has a very central focus. The orange and brown tones are nice as it he colours look burnt however the colours are prodomitly orange so maybe adding hints of brown could soften it. 

The other peice has a good texture however the colours seem too blunt maybe mixing them more would make them a bit more muted. Also layering more paint onto the canvas would create thicker marks which would look better. 

Nel Ten Wolde

Nel Ten Wolde works by using various techniques such as painting, photography and collage. All of which are inspired by (and including) references from her own travels. In the collages the photography is used as the main material  as also using drawing to harmonise with this.

Oil Paint

 

Experimenting with oil paint:

  Taking inspiration from one of my chosen artists pieces (Cy Twombly- Proteus) I decided to use oil paint in order to recreate the marks and the texture used found in the painting.

Before doing these I experimented by using a brush in order to get the colour close to the one I was studying, after finding the colour I moved on to try and recreate the marks. To do this I used a palette knife instead of brush.

                         

My first experiment using this way I focused solely on trying to copy my artists piece. However after this I moved on trying to mix and create other colours using various different tools to make different affects.

Then after doing this I used the same techniques but took studies off of objects such as flowers. In my opinion these did not work as well as I was trying to create particular marks

Gerhard Richter:



The first artist I've chosen is Gerhard Richter, I have chosen him because I particularly like the style in which he works and would like to try and experiment with this within my own work.

 A few pieces of his work link my personal theme natural forms which is also why I was drawn to him in particular.

Cy Twombly:

The second artist I have chosen is Cy Twombly, I chose him because I find his style of work interesting and would again like to experiment using this.

Robert Rauschenberg, Signs

Robert Rauschenberg was born on the 22nd of October 1925 and was 45 when he created this particular piece of work. The piece is influenced from events happening around him in his country involving politics. It is used to reflect on main political events such as; the Vietnam war 1955-75, The John F Kennedy assignation 1963 and Robert Kennedy assignation 1968, The Martin Luther king assignation 1968, Woodstock music festival 1969, The black civil rights movements 1954-68, as well as the Neil Armstrong landing on the moon 1969.




The piece is made up of a variety of different screen prints of images which were released in magazines around this time. (1960's-70's) However when released by the press the images would not have the same meaning as this piece does. All the people featuring in this piece have a strong link to the government and politics. The image as a whole is related a lot to death as nearly every person included were killed or died.
The largest part of the piece is the astronaut, highlighting the moon landing in 1969. Unlike the other images included the astronaut is large and made up of pale/light colours whereas the others are smaller and more darker colours. In my opinion they artist is trying to show the amount of positive aspects going on compared to the negative, and maybe showing that the moon landing was not done for scientific discovery but instead to move the publics focus from the negative parts to show how great America is.


The image of Janice Joplin in the top right stands out the most as it is in the primary colour red. When looking at the image you would be instantly drawn to such a bright colour first before taking in the rest of the image. The colour red fits as it is placed next to the images of the Vietnam soldiers highlighting the bloodshed caused by that particular event.


The majority of the people included were all killed or died while promoting many different forms of peace in different ways. The image of Janie Joplin shows Woodstock, a free music festival where popular artists at the time went to promote peace and anti war. And the picture of the deceased Martin Luther King shows his assignation while fighting for equal rights. There is a pattern and contrast between life and death shown in the piece as from the top left down to the bottom right there is a line of deceased people showing the bad aspects whereas in the bottom left corner and the top right it highlights the positive parts by making them larger.


The collage is made up of just photos using no other media, this betters the piece as its clear and gets the meaning across whereas if it involved a variety of medias it would get too busy and the meaning behind the image would get lost. The use of bright bold colours helps it stand out become more interesting to look at.

Manchester Art Gallery Visit

In the half term I visited a modern art gallery in Manchester and also the Lowry museum. There was a big difference between the modern art pieces and then Lowry's paintings which were done 1920+

Unfortunately I could not get any photos of Lowry's pieces however I got some photos from the modern art gallery.

 These photos showed how ordinary objects can be interpreted and challenges the concept of art as forms of paintings. as you entered the room the question 'what is art' was wrote on the wall and explains that when is an ordinary object seen as art, is it when it is placed in an certain environment or way by an artist or when it is in its natural environment.

 This room contained a plastic ball with pieces of charcoal attached too it, it was then encouraged that people moved the ball around the wall making the scratchy marks. This made me take another look on charcoal and made me like it more.

The last two images are from small video clips one focusing on the use of colour on natural and man made objects and the other showing movement of a body part.
